Al Gore's FULL climate change discussion at WEF

Al Gore's FULL climate change discussion at WEF

Al Gore's FULL climate change discussion at WEF

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.

 I'm Al Gore.
我是 Al Gore。

I'm opening this plenary to preview this outstanding panel that's going to come up here.

I want to set the stage if I could to all of the distinguished guests.

I don't have my distance glasses on but...

Your highness Hilde, Schwab, I want to thank Klaus Schwab for convening this plenary on this topic.

And I want to note that this is the fourth year in a row that the World Economic Forum has named the climate crisis as the number one threat to the global economy.

Of course, it is a threat to much else as well.

And I want to spend just a moment or two on the bad news and then quickly get to the good news before we bring this panel on.

And we have a great treat for you because my favorite broadcaster I think it's safe to say the world's favorite broadcaster.

Sir David Attenborough is going to give us preview of this magnificent new series: Our planet. That's coming out and you'll be seeing more of that a bit later.
David Attenborough

But first of all to set the context.

Since the last annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, we have had a number of detailed reports from the scientific community around the world.

Most importantly, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC, which only a few months ago issued a special interim report on how important it is to keep the temperature increase below one and a half degrees Celsius.

And the substance of that report was extremely sobering.

It quite properly commanded the attention of policymakers around the world.

Unfortunately, not all of them have acted on it a course.

But I bring it up just to underscore the significance of that report.

In my country, soon after we had what we call our National Climate Assessment, which was in the same spirit, warning us of what will occur if we do not take action boldly and urgently.

Then of the hothouse earth report came out prepared by several distinguished scientific institutes.

Again, with the same message, we have seen just in the last two weeks reports that the ice on Greenland is melting four times faster than was predicted, reports that the ice in East Antarctica where the bulk of the ice on the planet is is now beginning to melt much more rapidly and degrade.

So all of these findings add up to a very simple message.

We have to change.

We are putting 110 million tonnes of manmade heat trapping global warming pollution into the very thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet as if it's an open sewer and we do that every single day.

And you know there is a misconception that most of us have had at some point in our lives about the nature of the sky. It is not as it appears from the ground a vast and limitless expanse.

It is actually a very thin shell that has far fewer molecules than we might imagine.

If you could drive an automobile at normal freeway speed straight up in the into the sky, you would get to the top of the sky in five or ten minutes.

Defining the sky as that level where the heat-trapping gases are located and where we can't breathe anymore if we go higher.

So it has accumulated and it stays there for a long time.

And the accumulated amount that is up there now traps as much extra heat energy every day as would be released by 500,000 Hiroshima class atomic bombs exploding every day on the Earth's surface.

Let me say that again.

Five hundred thousand erosion Maasai's bombs every day.

It's a big planet.

But that is a lot of energy and 93 percent of that extra heat energy is going into the oceans.

But with apologies to Las Vegas of what happens in the ocean doesn't stay in the ocean, it comes back in the form of a disrupted water cycle.

With much more water evaporation coming off the oceans into the sky, and the atmospheric rivers that create the rain bombs and the floods and the mudslides, and the disrupted water cycle also features much longer and deeper more destructive droughts, and agriculture is suffering.

Temperatures are going up the five hottest years ever measured with instruments have been the last five years.

18 of the 19 hottest years have been in the last 19 years.

Now the fact that these predictions in the past from the scientists, who devote their lives to this task, have been predictions borne out by subsequent events should cause us to pay more attention to what they're predicting will happen in the years going forward if we don't change.

80 percent of all the energy on our planet comes from burning fossil fuels.

But here is the good news.

We can change that.

We have seen the kind of nearly miraculous cost reduction curves in solar electricity and wind electricity that we have seen and computer chips and other areas of high technology.

Batteries are now coming down and costs electric vehicles are soaring in popularity.

Efficiency improvements of all kinds have added up to the early stages of a sustainability revolution which has the magnitude of the Industrial Revolution but the speed of the digital revolution.

Giving executive teams the ability to manage atoms and molecules and electrons with the same efficiency that the information technology companies have demonstrated in managing bits of information.

We can solve this.

But we need leadership and I want to thank the World Economic Forum for providing leadership.

I came from meetings earlier today with the International Business Council where CEO after CEO from countries all over the world spoke up and said we have got to tackle this.

Some are and some aren't but some are really doing a fantastic job and more are joining them every single day.

Investors are changing as well.

So that's the good news.

We know we have to change because of the bad news.

We know we can change so the remaining question is will we change.

So in order to address that question and the state of our planet, I now want to invite our panelists to come on stage.

First of all, the incomparable Sir David Attenborough broadcaster and naturalist and winner of the Crystal Award Hilda last evening.

Thank you, sir.

Next Jacinda Ardern.

First of all, let's hear it for.

Thank you. thank you.

I think they've got you right here.

The prime minister of New Zealand and also a young global leader Jacinda Ardern.

I am a big fan.

Thank you so much Prime Minister, thank you very much.

And chairman of the Mahindra Group in India, member of the International Business Council and a good personal friend Anand Mahindra, thank you so much.

And finally a chair of the board of directors of zero-waste Academy in Japan Akira sakano.

Akira, welcome, thank you very much, thank you.
Akira,

I want to turn directly to the subject of our planet because you are a very skilled observer.

And over a lifetime, overall this time, you have watched this climate crisis and the crisis and humanity's relationship to nature develop.

What have you learned?

How serious is this.....

I heard your talk last night and I thought it was very eloquent but how serious is this in your view?

I can't imagine anything more serious.

I really can't.

And the trouble is that change is accelerating. Is it not?

Yeah. Things are getting worse faster than they were.

And but the maddening thing is that we now know how to deal with it.

Yeah.
是的。

We've just got to do so.

Yeah yeah yeah.

Why don't you think we…...I mean…...you're……

It's not fair to ask you a question about global politics but perhaps you have developed some views about why we've been so slow off the mark here?

Because the…...we prefer comfort than challenged in truth.

Yeah.
是的。

And a lot of us will do the same in our private lives.
Let's not be too hypocritical about this.

But it's much easier to say it doesn't really matter.

Yeah. It was not really happening anyway.

But to look at the consequences of what's happening is…...is the adult thing to do.

That's what we have to do now.

And you look at these beautiful animals and then here that we have lost half, more than half of all the actual animals not the species but the actual animals just in the last 30 40 years.

Absolutely so.

Because we've got very very sophisticated ways of killing them.

Yeah yeah.

And…...and we are in danger of losing half the species in this…...in this century.

Yes, multiple-studies have shown us this.

So I'm gonna come back to you. But speaking of global politics.

So we have a prime minister here and……

You're not gonna put it all on me.

Yeah. I said I'm a big fan of your work Prime Minister.

And I've said that publicly and I think you really represent a breath of fresh air and in world politics.

But I know that in leading your country, you're interested in improving the intergenerational well-being of New Zealanders and…...and build an international reputation for New Zealand and……

How do…...how do those challenges inform your approach to the climate crisis?

I think you could probably put them in the same basket what greater threat to our well-being is there than the current threat of climate change.

Yeah. we have a…...we have a tomb in New Zealand.

That's unique to New Zealand because it's a phrase from indigenous New Zealanders Marty.

it's this tomb kaitiakitanga and it means guardianship, specifically guardianship of our environment.

And so the way I'd like to think about are some politics taking on the challenge of climate changes that we have a short term, a three-year term that's our political cycle in which I see the challenges to embed in that period of time as deeply as we can the infrastructure for long term change.

One of the biggest threats I think that we have and you talked about why we're not making enough progress.

Political cycle this needs to be something that we embed in our national psyches and our political psyches and an erection and it needs to endure beyond us as individuals.

And so if we can do anything, we will be creating legislation which impedes those targets that ambition that we need, and then right through to the basic pragmatic things like planting a billion trees over ten years, creating investment funds, doing each of the things that will set us on a long-term path for guardianship because that's what we all have to take the responsibility and for.

I've been so happy at the proposals you've made since you took office.

It puts to mind saying from an American humorist in the 19th century, Mark Twain, who said do the right thing you'll gratify your friends and astonish your enemies.
