Inside Amazon's Spheres, the Biodome Office in Seattle
Some people ask why spheres?
And there are multiple reasons.
The spheres are found in nature.
we see it in the sight of the moon.
We see it in bubbles.
We see it even in the human eyes.
Welcome to the spheres.
Let’s go inside.
The idea was every Amazon employee.
Have the opportunity to get up from their desk.
To walk over to the spheres.
And to come to this kind of enviroment.
To think and act differently than they would inside an office building.
All of this spaces are attended to create different work environment.
When we were designing the campus we wanted to do something that was super special.
Not just for our employees and their families.
But also for seattleites.
We start thinking about what’s missing?
From the urban environment.
And it’s generally a link to nature.
So we wanted to link nature to the workplace.
There are ample studies that show that walking in the park versus walking on the cities street.
Results is you’ll be less stressed
Your cortisol level is reduced
You can concentrate better
When we decided to do spheres we found out there are many really attractive circle examples.
We like all those things but we want something organic to reflect the purpose of the building.
We found it in something called Pentengona Hexacontahedron.
If you look at this example this is one of our models we call it cadlon.
It’s in a long gated pentagon and which there would be sixty to create an entire sphere.
As i hold this 3D print up of a cadlon.
You’ll see behind it the large scale version of it the inside the sphere structure.
And as you look at the building it self.
It’s very hard to find this model.
Because it’s attended to look more like vines growing or spider webs.
The biggest challenge by far.
Was how to solve the environmental conditions here.
Traditional greenhouses as you know are hot and humid.
We are trying to create an environment for people in the day.
And it is for plants for day and at night.
As we are walking through the 7th avenue of the sphere we a call it the forest.
A company can hire like the best people and they do it all the time.
But often times they put these people in little boxes right in cubeicals.
They’re really not working at their fullest potential.
One of the things we wanted to do in the spheres.
Was to create a place where they could learn about something different.
Be curious about something different.
We have southeast asian pitcher plants.
This is anothor tropical vertinames.
It’s a Alocasia Porte.
這是Alocasia Portei。
Slipper orchids from southeast asia.
This is Begonia Sizemoreae, Vietnam.
This is one of my favorite spots here in the sphere.
Behind me is one of the largest indoor living walls in the country.
The wall stands about 62ft tall almost 50ft wide.
Has something in the oder of 25 thousand individual plants on it.
That’s a lot of green you know that we’re looking at.
During the day we have that environment for both of us survive.
But at night temperature lowers to 55 degrees.
And the humidity goes up to 85 percent.
So all the furniture all the equipment all the finishes are what we normally design for outdoor use.
On addition to the path to the forest.
There’s also this ringpath.
From here you can see we can look out to the city.
So you get of both worlds.
The campy walk was another idea of Amazons.
The campy
We wanted to create the opportunity for walking meetings
Because we knew that if you were walking through 1.2 to 1.8 miles per hour.
You are the best speed which to think.
Rubi is our largest tree.
Rubi
She came in at 55 feet.
It was a major task to get this tree in because the sphere had to be complete when the tree’s came in.
Because they need to have the environment they needed to thrive and live.
We had a crate an opening at the top of the building after we were complete big enough to pull in an tree like this.
The next stop is the bird cage
The bird cage is a space for comforting or to just work alone.
It is a space open like all the rest.
But we want to give it some privacy.
So you’ll notice some of the vines all the way from the floor below up on to the birdcage.
Provide that privacy strain.
Just one more floor.
Well this is our 4th floor.
It’s under the sky.
You can look 360 degrees under the city.
How fun is that?
Majority of people being born today will never see the milky way.
Because of the light pollution and living in cities.
We need to conteract that with as many different good ideas as we can.
The spheres is one of those good ideas.
The spheres
It not only creates alternative places to work.
But to reintroduce nature to the middle of the city.
Street trees are not enough we need to go farther.
