Extreme weather 2018 - (Record heat?) Europe's turn now - BBC News - 2nd August 2018
Our holiday makers heading to Spain and Portugal are being warned to prepare for extreme heat because record temperatures are expected on mainland Europe in the coming days.
The current record is 48 degrees Celsius, measured in Athens more than 40 years ago.
Chris Forks has the details.
Chris Forks
High temperatures in Spain and Portugal are not unusual at this time of year in height of summer, but what's to come over the next few days is going to be extreme and perhaps record-breaking.
Portugal looks set to have its hottest day for 15 years with temperatures possibly exceeding the record of 47 point 4 celcius set in 2003.
Spain may also set a new national record if highs go above 47.3 Celsius.
It's the summer that's already seen a number of temperature records smashed across the northern hemisphere and now it looks like being Europe's turn.
Over the next few days, an area of low pressure just sats to the west of Morocco is going to stop the cooler Atlantic airs from reaching Spain and Portugal.
And instead, air that was already heated from southern France is drifted across Spain and Portugal.
And it stagnates here the winds fall light and that allows temperatures to build up day by day.
Now, we're likely to see temperatures peak at around 47 degrees Celsius, that will challenge the national records for Spain and Portugal.
If we get to 48 degrees, it would make it Europe's hottest day ever on record.
To add to a list of records have already seen this year, Japan and South Korea have already set national new temperature records and Algeria has equalled the temperature record of highs of 51 degrees.
The big question is, will Europe be next?
Well, climate change is shifting the odds in favor of heat waves becoming more frequent.
Extreme heat waves can turn deadly.
During the heatwave of 2003 that set the UK temperature record of 38.5 Celsius at Faversham in Kent, and also set the French record of 44.1 Celsius, is estimated the extreme heat killed 35,000 people in Europe.
Over the next few days, another concern is that high temperatures could trigger thunderstorms which may not bring much in the way of rain but lightning may bring the threat of igniting wildfires.
If you're heading to the heat, the advice is to keep out of the midday Sun and stay well hydrated.
